Second Baruch

English, translated by Online Critical Pseudepigrapha — Online Critical Pseudepigrapha, English of the critical text

Moreover, I, Baruch, say this

against you, Babylon:

'If you had prospered and Zion

dwelt

in her glory,

it would have been great grief to us

that you

had become equal to Zion.

But now, behold, (there is) grief without measure

and sighing that has no limit,

for behold, you

prosper,

while Zion is laid waste.

Who will be a judge concerning these things?

Or to whom shall we complain about what has befallen us?

O Lord, how have you endured (it)?

Our fathers fell asleep without pains,

and behold, the righteous

sleep

in the earth in peace.

For they did not know this distress,

nor did they hear about that

which has befallen us.

May you have ears, O earth,

and you, dust, a heart,

and go and proclaim in Sheol,

and say to the dead:

'Blessed are you more than we who are alive!'
