What it is
Six orders covering agriculture, festivals, women, damages, holy things, and purities, recording the disputes of the sages in the barest form — this one says, that one says — and often declining to settle them.
Why it lasted
The foundation of rabbinic Judaism, compiled while Tertullian was writing in Carthage. It is the indispensable control for every claim about what Pharisees actually taught, and the document against which the church's account of Judaism has to be checked.
