The academies of Galilee
What it is
The Mishnah with the discussion the Galilean academies built around it, closed abruptly and unevenly — whole orders are missing — apparently because the conditions that supported the schools gave out under Christian imperial rule.
Why it lasted
Compiled in the province where the church was building its holy places, and the only rabbinic work produced under a Christian government rather than a Persian one. Its abrupt ending is itself evidence about the fourth century in Palestine.
