The Rheims New Testament

Gregory Martin and the English College

Read elsewhere

What it is

An English Catholic translation from the Vulgate, made by exiles and deliberately literal, with notes answering Protestant readings verse by verse.

Why it lasted

The Catholic English Bible for three centuries, and its Latinate vocabulary influenced the King James translators, who consulted it while attacking it.

Where to read it

Public domain and free to read in full, though not held here. The archives below have it.

These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
