What it is
A settlement of the disputes that split Lutheranism after Luther's death — free will, good works, the Lord's Supper, the person of Christ — negotiated over years.
Why it lasted
It saved Lutheranism from fragmenting, at the cost of excluding those who could not sign, and completed the Book of Concord.
