What it is
A method of interior quiet in which the soul ceases from acts and simply rests in God, leaving even meditation and petition behind.
Why it lasted
Approved, immensely popular, then condemned in 1687 with its author imprisoned for life — the case that gave Quietism its name and made mysticism suspect for a century.
