What it is
Preaching in Brazil and Lisbon against the enslavement of Indigenous peoples and the cruelty of colonists, including a sermon preached to fish when the people would not listen.
Why it lasted
The finest Portuguese prose of the century, and its author was tried by the Inquisition partly for what he said about the treatment of Indians and Jews.
