What it is

Preaching in Brazil and Lisbon against the enslavement of Indigenous peoples and the cruelty of colonists, including a sermon preached to fish when the people would not listen.

Why it lasted

The finest Portuguese prose of the century, and its author was tried by the Inquisition partly for what he said about the treatment of Indians and Jews.

Where to read it

Public domain and free to read in full, though not held here. The archives below have it.

These open a search on each archive rather than a direct link, which is the honest way to point at an edition nobody here has checked line by line.
