What it is

An account of how everything came to be that opens by arguing with everyone who has said chaos came first, then narrates the making of the rulers, the coming of Eve as instructor, the phoenix and the beasts of Egypt, and the end when the rulers turn on each other.

Why it lasted

The most encyclopedic gnostic cosmology to survive, drawing on Jewish, Christian, Egyptian, Greek, and astrological material at once, and written for an audience that had to be argued with rather than initiated.
