An eyewitness account, circulated as a letter, of the arrest and burning of the aged bishop of Smyrna, who had known the apostolic generation and refused at the last to swear by the emperor's fortune.

Why it lasted

The earliest martyrdom narrative outside Scripture, and the text that set the pattern for how the church would remember its martyrs for the next two centuries.
