What it is
An argument that the humanity of Christ is real and complete but has no independent subsistence of its own — it exists in the person of the Word rather than in a person of its own.
Why it lasted
The enhypostasia, which is the conceptual repair that let Chalcedon answer its critics on both sides. Every later Byzantine Christology, and Barth's in the twentieth century, runs through this idea.
