What it is
An answer to Egyptian millenarians, arguing on grounds of vocabulary, grammar, and style that whoever wrote Revelation cannot be the man who wrote the fourth gospel — the one writes flawless Greek and never names himself, the other names himself constantly and writes barbarously.
Why it lasted
The first sustained work of literary criticism in Christian history, using arguments no different in kind from a modern authorship study, and the reason Revelation's place in the Eastern canon stayed unsettled for centuries.
