What it is

Seven books by a recent convert, ridiculing pagan mythology in exhaustive detail while holding theological opinions the church would not have endorsed.

Why it lasted

Written to prove the sincerity of his conversion to a doubtful bishop, and an unmatched catalogue of Roman religious practice at the moment it began to disappear.
