The Abgar Correspondence

What it is
King Abgar of Edessa writes to Jesus asking him to come and heal him, having heard he cures without herbs or drugs. Jesus replies that he cannot come but will send a disciple afterwards — and blesses those who have not seen and yet believed.
Why it lasted
Taken as authentic for over a thousand years, and the founding charter of Syriac Christianity's claim to apostolic origin. The letter was copied onto city gates as a protective charm across the Christian East.
